Realising the rhetoric: linking science to policy

07/06/2012 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

We are pleased to present our second seminar for 2012, with an insightful topic exploring the integration between science and policy.

Australia is facing water and catchment management challenges that will place enormous pressures on policy makers, political and industry leaders, and the scientific community. Our catchment science is wide-ranging and evolving, but is being stretched to inform our management. Our catchment management is well-established and supported by sound frameworks, but can lack in scientific grounding and be influenced by short-term political interests. To face our challenges will require linking science to policy, to a much greater extent in the future, to realose the rhetoric and achieve sustainable catchment management.

Ross Hardie, from Alluvium and a Peter Cullen Trust fellow, will be hosting the following presentors:

  • Professor Barry Hart– Board member of the MDBA, Director of Water Science, Emeritus Professor at Monash University, and member of numerous scientific advisory committees
  • Kelvin Thomson MP – Federal member for Wills (north-western Melbourne), Chair of Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Treaties, and former State member for Pascoe Vale
  • Christine Forster – Member of the Proposed Basin Plan Testing Committee, Chair of Melbourne University’s Community and Industry Advisory Board, and Director at VicSuper
